Jodie Ouimet — A Mountain Town Story
My story begins at Sun Peaks Resort in 1993 soon after high school graduation and long before real estate. My first job, (and my first discovery of what I might want to do with my life) was rooted outdoors. I worked in food and beverage in winter then transitioned into golf course maintenance, in summer helping to develop the very first nine holes of the Sun Peaks Resort Golf Course. I was the one out there cutting grass (possibly hung over) at sunrise, shaping drainage, installing irrigation, and learning the ecology of the land. I loved those days, the smell of the turf, the sound of early-morning sprinklers, the birds, the bears, the satisfaction of watching a course take shape under our hands. And the life-long friends from back then that I still cherish today. Those were the days.
That passion led me to pursue formal training (and let’s face it, I was almost 30 by this time). I earned a Diploma in Horticulture with a major in Turf Management from Olds College in 2003. Fresh out of school, I was hired by Greywolf Golf Course at Panorama Mountain Resort in Invermere, BC, another world-class mountain destination. Soon after, I was promoted to foreman of the crew building the driving range at Greywolf.
It was there, surrounded by Purcells and looking out towards the Rocky Mountains, that I met the Director of Sales for Playground Real Estate at Panorama. That chance meeting changed the trajectory of my career. I never did return to the golf course — but I do expect to, someday, in retirement.
Instead, my journey led me into real estate sales. I joined Playground Real Estate, the sales and marketing division for Intrawest’s resort developments. It was an exhilarating environment, rich with professional training and team energy. I attended a few Intrawest retreats and earned some high-performance awards. My focus was resort and recreational real estate: new construction, pre-sales, and selling off-plan homes designed for people chasing the mountain lifestyle.
In 2005, I joined an unforgettable project: the pre-sale of a 254-unit condominium The Lodge at Suncadia in Roslyn, Washington, a historic mining town east of Seattle. Those six months were intense, inspiring, phenomenal ski season at Alpental, and more great friends; a highlight of my early career.
When Playground eventually dissolved, its leadership went on to establish Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, and I was recruited to join their new team at RED Mountain Resort in Rossland. Our group was tasked with pre-selling Slalom Creek, Morning Star, The Mountain Project, and Caldera—developments that would go on to define the heart of the resort village.
Then came 2008 and the global financial downturn. It was a challenging time, but it anchored me here in Rossland, where I joined Lifestyle Properties, a local real estate brokerage. There, I recognized a growing need for rental property management (and a paycheque!) especially for out-of-town owners. In response, I earned my Property Management License in 2010 and began managing short- and long-term rentals.
By 2011, that vision and drive had evolved into something larger: Mountain Town Properties. What started as a vacation rental company soon became a fully licensed real estate brokerage and property management firm. We grew organically — through performance, word-of-mouth, and the trust of owners, guests, and clients who valued fairness, service and results.
Today, Mountain Town Properties thrives because of innovation, technology, hard work, grit and an amazing team. The combination of real estate and property management remains our secret to long-term success.
Outside of work, I’m a Mom who loves golfing, skiing, camping, and working in my yard—still happiest outdoors, just like when it all began. My partner Brian has survived life threatening cancer and was away in Vancouver getting treatment when our son was only 2 years old and I was running a business. Today, we try to focus on one day at a time. And boy is time flying. My diploma in Turf Management reminds me that everything grows stronger with care, balance, and good roots.
My goal has always been to stay innovative, creative, and grounded, building a business that reflects the mountain lifestyle I love—and to someday, when the time is right, return to where it all began: back on the golf course, cutting grass at sunrise.
In 1990, after skiing for only a year, I participated in the Velocity Challenge: Speed Skiing race. See my run below!…
